Crocheting Roving~or "Too Lazy to Spin" Project

I've got so much wool roving that I need to spin up, but it's just so time consuming on a drop spindle so I've kind of pushed it to the wayside for several months.........UNTIL I found this website http://fibermill.yurtboutique.com/crochetroving.htm

Instead of a rug for my colorful superwash rovings, I started an afghan worked in double crochet with an "N" hook. Makes a really thick, lightweight, fluffy fabric. I just draft out a pencil-thickness of fibers directly from the roving.

March 21 -- Ostara -- Spring or The Vernal Equinox
Also known as: Lady Day or Alban Eiler (Druidic)

As Spring reaches its midpoint, night and day stand in perfect balance, with light on the increase. The young Sun God now celebrates a hierogamy (sacred marriage) with the young Maiden Goddess, who conceives. In nine months, she will again become the Great Mother. It is a time of great fertility, new growth, and newborn animals.

The next full moon (a time of increased births) is called the Ostara and is sacred to Eostre the Saxon Lunar Goddess of fertility (from whence we get the word estrogen, whose two symbols were the egg and the rabbit.

The Christian religion adopted these emblems for Easter which is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. The theme of the conception of the Goddess was adapted as the Feast of the Annunciation, occurring on the alternative fixed calendar date of March 25 Old Lady Day, the earlier date of the equinox. Lady Day may also refer to other goddesses (such as Venus and Aphrodite), many of whom have festivals celebrated at this time.

Traditional Foods:
Leafy green vegetables, Dairy foods, Nuts such as Pumpkin, Sunflower and Pine. Flower Dishes and Sprouts.

Herbs and Flowers:
Daffodil, Jonquils, Woodruff, Violet, Gorse, Olive, Peony, Iris, Narcissus and all spring flowers.

Crocheted Slouchy Hat

After searching for a Slouch Hat pattern in crochet, I returned to my tried and true beret pattern and modified it a bit( http://www.knitting-crochet.com/crochet/ber.html )

Using an I hook and worsted weight yarn (Bernat Camo) , I made the center round to a diameter of 13".

Then work even for 1 1/2 inches.

Next round I did a sc decrease every 10th stitch

Following rounds I did a sc decrease every 7th stitch until it fit my head

Then 3 rounds worked even for the brim.

(Next project I'm working in hdc for a more open stitch )

I haven't been to Michael's in years...well, today it was Michael's and Joann's. I even enabled a gal at Joann's that asked me if I knit? She was clutching a "learn to knit" kit and wondering what the right yarn to start with was. We had a ball picking out yarn for grandkids's future afghans~lol

I decided to attack something that required more thought, for me anyway, and found this capelet pattern that looked cute and do-able. If you try it, note the first round says: "3dc in next 3ch". Well, it's actually 1dc in each of the next 3 chains, not 3dc in each. Otherwise, it worked up fairly quickly. I used a big hook (m) with 2 strands of homespun yarn~the pattern calls for a bulky weight yarn.

Crocheted Wrist Warmers

I finally crocheted up a pr of wristwarmers before they went out of style...lol These used some of my handspun wool.
I started with a chain long enough to circle my forearm, slip stitched it to form a circle and sc'd a couple rounds~changing to 2sc, sk stitch, repeat , until they were long enough to my liking, adding a contrasting border. I decided to forego the thumbs, as I wanted my digits free to be able to craft while wearing them and not have the wool rubbing between my thumb and forefinger.

Kitty Sweater

One of my cats has an OCD where he grooms excessively (licks his fur off) so he gets chilly in the winter. The dog sweaters just weren't comfortable on him , so I decided to try and crochet one for him. The first try was the brown one, which I decided had too narrow of a top tab, so added to it when I made the red/black sweater.

Here's how I basically started, and eventually tweaked my pattern:
J Hook
chain 38 and slip stitch to form a ring.
work in the round using whatever stitch you prefer~sc, dc, whatever~until it is about 8 inches in length.(it will be a tube)
Work sc for 15 stitches, chain 1, then turn your work so you are making rows back and forth in sc for about 2 inches.
Chain 17 stitches, attach to opposite end of your 2" top tab with a slip stitch, and work back and forth for about 3 rows to make the front piece. This goes over the head.
Fits a small-med. sized cat.

Free Sewing Patterns

I've been searching around for a fleece sock pattern and happened upon this site:

The dimensions I came up with that work best for me (sz 9-10) is~
Vamp: 6"x 15-16" round corners on toe end narrowing it
Sole: 6"x 10-11" round all corners
Heel: 6"x8" round the corners on heel end where it meets the sole

You can further tailor these pieces as desired~look at "Rachel's" 1st comment/pictures on the Instructables site. It takes cutting out a basic pattern and adjusting it here and there for your foot. These are my pattern pieces.

Jessica's (Hectichousehold) daughter, Carmen, sent me a kit last year to make a wool purse. I didn't get to the purse, but instead used the yarn to fashion this crocheted hat. I love how it self-stripes. "Thanks Carmen!" :)
Kelley, (Braidenstone's Parlour) made me the awesome turquoise necklace and my sister gave me the cashmere blend sweater recently. I'm just wrapped up with good energies.

It's "Witchy Hats" time again.....I'm starting on a Fall-themed one here in crochet. Once it gets big enough to fit on my head I'll make a floppy brim~stay tuned....
I start with a chain 3-make into a ring-sc twice in each stitch for a round-then alternate with working each round even/doing * increases* as for regular flat circular crochet to give it a conical shape. I used a "J" hook with 2 strands of worsted wt yarns~thick enough for it to hold it's shape and not flop over too much. Once it's large enough for your skull start the brim:
round1: 2sc, 1 in each stitch 5 times, repeat
round2: work even
round3: 2sc, 1 in each stitch 6 times, repeat
round4: work even
round5: 2sc, 1 in each stitch 7 times, repeat
round6: work even
round7: 2sc, 1 in each stitch 8 times, repeat
round 8: work even
round 9: slip stitch all stitches

*increases for flat circle*-
round 1 - 2 sc in stitch , 1 sc , repeat
round 2- 2 sc in stitch, 1 sc, 1sc, repeat
round 3- 2 sc in stitch, 1 sc, 1 sc, 1sc, repeat
continue increasing the 1sc in subsequent rounds-if it gets wavy, work 1 round even , no increases. It it cups, in needs more stitches.

I saw this article in an eastern Colorado paper I subscribe to, and my stepson works at the prison, so I decided to rustle up some yarn I could easily spare to donate to their program. The inmates crochet & knit for local hospitals and nursing homes~worthy cause. Something you may want to ck into in your own community~keeps people busy with good things. I contacted the unit mgr about other things they needed, and they are thinking of getting into doing quilting, but needed to get supplies. I got busy and cleaned out my fabric drawers and loaded up a spare sewing machine. My neighbor gave me another sewing machine to donate as well.

Red and I went for a mid-day walk through the park a couple blks from our house and veered off the path to check out a berry bush. Well, we inadvertently flushed out a coyote den. The pair went opposite directions but circled back to it so we figured they must have some kids in there too. This was an important holiday in the old days & is in our DNA from ancestral times, when we were much more tied to the changing seasons and raising our own sustenance.

Samhain Lore (October 31st)

Samhain, (pronounced SOW-in, SAH-vin, or SAM-hayne) means "End of Summer", and is the third and final Harvest. The dark winter half of the year commences on this Sabbat.

It is generally celebrated on October 31st, but some traditions prefer November 1st. It is one of the two "spirit-nights" each year, the other being Beltane. It is a magical interval when the mundane laws of time and space are temporarily suspended, and the Thin Veil between the worlds is lifted. Communicating with ancestors and departed loved ones is easy at this time, for they journey through this world on their way to the Summerlands. It is a time to study the Dark Mysteries and honor the Dark Mother and the Dark Father, symbolized by the Crone and her aged Consort.

Originally the "Feast of the Dead" was celebrated in Celtic countries by leaving food offerings on altars and doorsteps for the "wandering dead". Today a lot of practitioners still carry out that tradition. Single candles were lit and left in a window to help guide the spirits of ancestors and loved ones home. Extra chairs were set to the table and around the hearth for the unseen guest. Apples were buried along roadsides and paths for spirits who were lost or had no descendants to provide for them. Turnips were hollowed out and carved to look like protective spirits, for this was a night of magic and chaos. The Wee Folke became very active, pulling pranks on unsuspecting humans. Traveling after dark was was not advised. People dressed in white (like ghosts), wore disguises made of straw, or dressed as the opposite gender in order to fool the Nature spirits.

This was the time that the cattle and other livestock were slaughtered for eating in the ensuing winter months. Any crops still in the field on Samhain were considered taboo, and left as offerings to the Nature spirits. Bonfires were built, (originally called bone-fires, for after feasting, the bones were thrown in the fire as offerings for healthy and plentiful livestock in the New Year) and stones were marked with peoples names. Then they were thrown into the fire, to be retrieved in the morning. The condition of the retrieved stone foretold of that person's fortune in the coming year. Hearth fires were also lit from the village bonfire to ensure unity, and the ashes were spread over the harvested fields to protect and bless the land.

Various other names for this Greater Sabbat are Third Harvest, Samana, Day of the Dead, Old Hallowmas (Scottish/Celtic), Vigil of Saman, Shadowfest (Strega), and Samhuinn. Also known as All Hallow's Eve, (that day actually falls on November 7th), and Martinmas (that is celebrated November 11th), Samhain is now generally considered the Witch's New Year.

Third Harvest, the Dark Mysteries, Rebirth through Death.

Symbols of Samhain:
Gourds, Apples, Black Cats, Jack-O-Lanterns, Besoms.

Herbs of Samhain:
Mugwort, Allspice, Broom, Catnip, Deadly Nightshade, Mandrake, Oak leaves, Sage and Straw.

Foods of Samhain:
Turnips, Apples, Gourds, Nuts, Mulled Wines, Beef, Pork, Poultry.

Incense of Samhain:
Heliotrope, Mint, Nutmeg.

Colors of Samhain:
Black, Orange, White, Silver, Gold.

Stones of Samhain:
All Black Stones, preferably jet or obsidian.

My pepper plants are positioned along the southside of the garage, and for some reason the radiant heat has thwarted any freezing that the rest of the garden has suffered. So I'm chopping away the peppers that we picked a few days ago, b/4 I pick the rest . Some of the plants reached almost 5 ft tall this year!

Autumn Equinox, 2nd Harvest, September 21st

Mabon, (pronounced MAY-bun, MAY-bone, MAH-boon, or MAH-bawn) is the Autumn Equinox. The Autumn Equinox divides the day and night equally, and we all take a moment to pay our respects to the impending dark. We also give thanks to the waning sunlight, as we store our harvest of this year's crops. The Druids call this celebration, Mea'n Fo'mhair, and honor the The Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.

Various other names for this Lesser Wiccan Sabbat are The Second Harvest Festival, Wine Harvest, Feast of Avalon, Equinozio di Autunno (Strega), Alben Elfed (Caledonii), or Cornucopia. The Teutonic name, Winter Finding, spans a period of time from the Sabbat to Oct. 15th, Winter's Night, which is the Norse New Year.

At this festival it is appropriate to wear all of your finery and dine and celebrate in a lavish setting. It is the drawing to and of family as we prepare for the winding down of the year at Samhain. It is a time to finish old business as we ready for a period of rest, relaxation, and reflection.

Symbols of Mabon:
wine, gourds, pine cones, acorns, grains, corn, apples, pomegranates, vines such as ivy, dried seeds, and horns of plenty.

Protection, prosperity, security, and self-confidence. Also those of harmony and balance.

Deities of Mabon:
Goddesses-Modron, Morgan, Epona, Persephone, Pamona and the Muses. Gods-Mabon, Thoth, Thor, Hermes, and The Green Man.

Mabon is considered a time of the Mysteries. It is a time to honor Aging Deities and the Spirit World. Considered a time of balance, it is when we stop and relax and enjoy the fruits of our personal harvests, whether they be from toiling in our gardens, working at our jobs, raising our families, or just coping with the hussle-bussle of everyday life. May your Mabon be memorable, and your hearts and spirits be filled to overflowing!

Halloween Quilt

Yesterday I pulled open my "Halloween Fabric" drawer and decided it was time for these prints to be used ....and fast! I cut out and randomly arranged the blocks yesterday and stitched them together today into a quilt top. I plan to back it and bat it with some berber fleece that's just taking up room, then tie it off. More than likely I'll send it out to Eastern CO. The prints aren't too "kidsy"(lots of skeletons), so I think maybe he'll tolerate it. (Thanks Trish, for sending many of the fabrics I used!! ) I cut the blocks large (10") so the project would go quickly, as Fall is fast approaching and I don't want this to turn into a Christmas project.

Icelandic Wool

One of my petsitting clients went to Iceland this summer~she asked me what I'd like from there and the first thing that came to mind was some of their Icelandic wool. In my teens, my mother worked for a Scandinavian Import Shoppe and we wore hats, scarves, mittens & coats from Icelandic wool~perfect for the Minnesota winters.
Expecting a skein or 2 I was astounded to find 8 fat Lopi skeins at my most recent visit to her house!! (I've some of the best clients!!)
I've got 3 different colors (all natural) to work with. I'm thinking maybe a bag for winter; not sure yet. If you've ever felt Icelandic wool, it's a bit coarse but suited for outerwear and hard wearing. Slippers would be nice too.

Green Chile

Made up a monster batch of green chile and got to use my pressure canner for the first time. Word of caution: don't use glass mayo jars in the pressure canner. I had no problem with them in water bath canning, but the one I used in the pressure canner burst. I got 15 qts out of the batch.

Norwegian Kitchen Witch

My friend, Leanne, from Australia, sends me the coolest things. A while back she sent me a "wattle fairy"~it's done by an Australian poly-clay artist. The heads, trunk , hands&feet are all crafted of poly-clay. ("Wattle" is an Australian acacia tree~"Wattle Day" is also the first day of Spring)
Well, just yesterday, this Norwegian Kitchen Witch appeared on my doorstep! Aren't they both just the most amazing little gals?!

Here's a bag I cranked out using up several stray skeins & cones of cotton yarn. Starting with SC in the round, then changing to working it even in HDC, then to DC, finishing with 2 rows of SC~adding 40 chains for the handles and 2 more rows after that. They are fairly easy to create, but very time consuming. That's Eddy giving it the "once over" inspection.

Last week we spread out 10 yds of red mulch over the existing grass areas of the yard. Red designed a horseshoe pit(above) in one section and the other houses my removable clothesline.

We had our 4th annual Neighborhood 4th of July BBQ at our place. Weather was pleasant and fairly cool~rained a bit after everyone had left, so couldn't ask for a better day. Burgers , Brats, Beans, Beverages and all the neighbors pitched in with the rest of the fixin's~desserts galore! Fun was had by all. ;)

Here's a cotton skirt I crocheted for my sister~I'm sending as a 4th of July gift. They make nice swim suit coverups and she lives on a lake or 2 in MN so spends some time in swimsuits this time of year. ;)~but they also are fine as a regular skirt as I do single crochet stitches throughout the hip area so they aren't so "see-through" there.

My friend & neighbor was needing a summer tunic for his Viking reinactments. This is what I came up with. One of my sewing machines(the 503 special "rocketeer") does decorative stitches so I tried a few out on the hems and neckline. This started out as a mock-up from muslin to use for sizing, but he liked it so I added some border color and black stitching. He'll probably dye it a darker color and add lacings for the neck opening, but I think it turned out pretty decent for a first stab at clothing a Jarl. I used a NA shirt pattern as the basis and cut the sleeves off. He wanted battle gussets under the arms, so I added those to give increased movement.

Although the name Litha is not well attested, it may come from Saxon tradition -- the opposite of Yule. On this longest day of the year, light and life are abundant. At mid-summer, the Sun God has reached the moment of his greatest strength. Seated on his greenwood throne, he is also lord of the forests, and his face is seen in church architecture peering from countless foliate masks.

The Christian religion converted this day of Jack-in-the-Green to the Feast of St. John the Baptist, often portraying him in rustic attire, sometimes with horns and cloven feet (like the Greek Demi-God Pan)

Midsummer Night's Eve is also special for adherents of the Faerie faith. The alternative fixed calendar date of June 25 (Old Litha) is sometimes employed by Covens. The name Beltane is sometimes incorrectly assigned to this holiday by some modern traditions of Wicca, even though Beltane is the Gaelic word for May.

I was all proud of myself. I consolidated 4 mesh storage bins of yarn into just 2 by reorganizing and sending a box of fun furs to Lisa in KY to use for her tribal dance costuming. Then I happen to stop into Hobby Lobby while up in Greeley visiting my son...........clearance.............now I'm diggin out the original mesh bins........lol Organization lasted about 24 hrs. I couldn't believe they were clearancing their "Infatuation" yarn~I've made 4 shawls in various colors from that yarn and it's soft as rabbits fur and usually expensive. Couldn't pass it up....44 skeins later........

Fast & Easy Apron Top Tutorial

This is a lined easy to do apron top that you can stitch up fast. I'm like a sz 10-12, so you can adjust the width accordingly if you are smaller or larger, although it's very forgiving, as the ties make it adjustable. For a "halter top" it's still pretty modest as long as you're comfortable showing your sexy back. ;) lol

Here's your pattern(as shown above): Measurements
Center top to bottom: 27" (vertical)
Bodice top l to r: 13"(horizontal)
Sides, armhole to bottom hem: 18 1/2" (vertical)
Width across bottom: 31 1/2" (same measurement as where sides start, measuring across)
Arm holes are 7" down from the top neckline of the bodice top( measure from center top of neck down 7" , then go horizontally to where sides should start) free hand draw the armhole curve.

Fold the pattern in half and lay on the fold. Cut out 2

Ties: 5" x 17" tapering at the ends to a rounded shape. Cut 4

Stitch the side ties to the bodice as shown~2 sets
Put right sides together and starting at the top right corner of the neckline, stitch armhole, side tie, down the side. Sew both sides. Sew bottom hem. Leave neckline open.
Turn right sides out and press.
Turn under neckline raw edges and press.
Turn top of neckline to the inside lining 1 1/2 inches~press and topstitch closed leaving a casing for your cord/ ribbon/ fabric drawstring.
Thread your drawstring through the top casing
Tie it on around the neck~halter-style and behind your back snugly.

My son, Bryn, is graduating from the Peace Officer's Academy next Friday.
He's secured a position with the City of Greeley's Police Dept.
We aren't sure exactly "when"~could be right away or as late as August. The Police chief and captains are going to be in attendance. Next Thurs. we get to attend a "pre-grad reception" that will show us what all they've been doing for the past 8-9 months. ;)

The book is worth every penny IMO as you draft your own patterns from your exact measurements, so a great fit is guaranteed. ;)

Cool 'n Easy Summer Dress Tutorial

I made up this pattern for an easy-to-stitch-up pullover summer dress. I'll give you the play by play starting with the bodice.

Part I: Make your bodice pattern with scrap fabric or paper.

1) Measure your underbust. Take that measurement and add 6 1/2 ". Divide the resulting number by 2. This # will be the inches across for the bottom of your bodice piece.

2) Measure up the sides 5 1/2 inches

3) Measure up the center 7 inches and mark that spot~it is the center top of the neckline.

4) You can either free hand draw or trace from an existing tank top the neckline scoop and armholes. The top of the straps will be 2" across.

5) Once you have your pattern drawn, cut out 4 pieces.
One set will be the lining.

6) With right sides together(1 bodice piece w/1 lining piece)stitch neckline and armholes. Do for both front & back bodice sections.

7) Now open it up so you can access the side seams and stitch together at the side seams both front and back bodice/lining sections.

8) Turn right side out and press.

9) Cut 2, 14" x 4" strap pieces. Turn under raw sides 1/2" and press. Fold in half lengthwise and press. Topstitch close to outer edges.

10) On bodice, turn under the back strap openings about 1/4" and press~insert the strap end into the opening and topstitch across to secure it (twice or 3 times for strength) Leave the front for now~that will be fitted once the skirt is attached.

Part II: Skirt ~

1) I like to use up my scrap fabric, so for the skirt portion I make a length of patchwork fabric measuring up to 36"(30-36") across for the front and up to 36" across for the back sections. Length is your preference~you can do full length for a hippie look or a shorter sundress length. Width will be approximately up to 72" total when you stitch the front and back sections together .
(60-72" depending on your size & how full you like it~this one is 64")

2) Do 2 rows of basting stitches along the top of the skirt fabric piece.

3) Gather the top skirt by pulling the 2 rows of basting stitches, fitting it to the bodice

4) Stitch skirt to bodice

5) Try it on and adjust the front straps to fit~pinning into place, then stitch them the same as the back.

6) Hem bottom. Pockets are handy~optional to add a couple deep pockets. ;)

I spent the better part of the morning doing an autopsy , getting all the lint and whatnot out and WD-40ing and oiling. Sews smooth and lots more quiet now. Look at the lint that was built up under the needle plate. LOL That's pretty typical of people's vintage machines that haven't been maintained for decades. She's all clean now and ready to go!

I went to the local garden center and picked up one cauliflower & one broccoli plant, just to see how they do here as a cool season crop. I also purchased a few tomato plants that I potted & am keeping indoors at night and outside on nice days. A couple of them are "cold tolerant" varieties~will also see how they perform once I decide to leave them outside full time in a few weeks.

Saint Patrick

St. Patrick was not actually Irish. He was born around 373 A.D. in the British Isles near the modern city of Dumbarton in Scotland. His real name was Maewyn Succat. He took the name of Patrick, or Patricius, meaning "well-born" in Latin, after he became a priest. During Patrick's boyhood, the Roman empire was near collapse and too weak to defend its holdings in distant lands. Britain became easy prey for raiders, including those who crossed the Irish sea from the land known as Hibernia or Ireland. When Patrick was sixteen, he was seized by raiders and carried off to Ireland. It is known that he was sold in Ireland as a slave to several chieftains. He became fluent in the Irish language before making his escape to the continent. Eventually he was ordained as a deacon, then priest and finally as a bishop. Pope Celestine then sent him back to Ireland to preach the gospel. Evidently he was a great traveller, especially in Celtic countries, as innumerable places in Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are named after him.

At the time, Ireland was governed by paganism and in many regions the Druids. The Druids understood the importance of organization and were in the midst of pulling all regions and tribes of Ireland into one fold of religious belief. Ireland is well known for having many Gods and Goddesses, many of which are the same deity, but known by different names in different regions of the country. The Druids were attempting, and doing so successfully, to bring all these mythologies under 1 roof to solidify not only a belief system, but a method of governing it's people. Which, in their thinking, would pull the many rival tribes together into one government. This would allow the Irish people to fight more successfully against it's invaders, such as the Romans, Brits and even the Christians.

At the same time, the Christians were establishing their own foot hold in the emerald isle. While not the first to bring Christianity to Ireland, it was Patrick who encountered the Druids at Tara and abolished their pagan rites. He converted the warrior chiefs and princes, baptizing them and thousands of their subjects in the Holy Wells which still bear that name. In an attempt to convert the remaining Druids and their followers who practiced their beliefs in the face of these new 'laws', the Church took many pagan holidays and transformed them into Christian holidays or festivals. Many pagans followed along with this practice. Many of these Christian holidays and their pagan symbology still exist today.

After some time and under great persecution, the Druids and remaining pagans either left the country, or took their religious beliefs underground. While it is true there are no snakes in Ireland, chances are that there never have been since the time the island was separated from the rest of the continent at the end of the ice age. As in many old pagan religions serpent symbols were common, and possibly even worshipped. Driving the "snakes" from Ireland was symbolic of putting an end to that pagan practices and their beliefs.

Now it's not just out of a whim that St. Patricks Day is on the 17th of March. The festival was designed to coincide, and it was hoped to replace, the pagan holiday known as Ostara (pagan holidays are called sabbats). This is the 2nd spring festival for pagans and occurs each year at the Spring Equinox. This year, that's March 20th. Ostara is a celebration of the rebirth of nature, the balance of the universe when the day and night are equal in length. For pagans, it is the time to honor the God who comes to join the Goddess in her Maiden form and bring new life and fertility to the growing season. Pagans then and now, use this day for not only spiritual preparation by balancing the energies of the self, family and home for the coming season, but also to prepare for the working of the divine in their daily lives. Reconsecrating tools used in planting, blessing seeds and garden areas are common practices today.

We got 16 yds of compost/manure/peat delivered on the street yesterday. It's all wheeled in & spread now on the new garden plot & we topped off the existing gardens as well. I love taking these early spring pics of empty gardens and comparing them in June and then in August. On to planting fruit trees. 2 peaches and an apple that I'm planting in honor of my mom~I always remember the big apple tree we had in the backyard growing up.
Oh, and gee, if you need seed potatoes, Wal-Mart has then available now. My store had 4 varieties as well as onion sets.

my sister made this wool hooked mat in memory of our mother. The pattern
is called "Lavender". Beautiful! Hugs Ruthie.

Then my friend, Karin, sent me some pieces of western printed fabrics, because she knows I love them! ((Karin))!!

I cut the fabrics into blocks and added some of my own and stitched them together to make a wrap skirt ~just have the hems & waistband to finish off.

Planning More Garden Space

These are the raised bed gardens that I currently have.
Below is the big patch of grass that we're converting into a 8ft wide horseshoe pit on the left and the rest will be tilled and topped with manure for a garden. Water has gotten too precious and costly around here to just cultivate grass, so I figure if I have to water it, I'm going to get something good out of it. ;)

Any fragrance oil with "vanilla" in it will always turn soap brown. The yummy scent is worth it though. I saved out a couple cups of the unscented soap "batter" to use as frosting~it was setting up real quick though, so didn't get to do much swirling with it.

The denim one has little bees embroidered on it. I love the simplicity of wrap dresses and wrap skirts~you can adjust the fit so easily.
